Direct satellite TV is kicking cable in the rear

A recent article by Ben Charny at CNET News.com reported that direct satellite TV gained 2 million customers in 2002, marking growth of 8%.  In contrast, cable, for the first time ever, experienced flat growth rate.  It is clear that consumers are ditching cable for direct satellite TV systems.

It is not surprising that direct satellite TV is capturing customers from cable TV companies.  Currently, satellite TV dealers from the Dish Network and Direct TV are literally giving away satellite TV systems.  In addition to getting free equipment, here is a small list of other direct satellite TV advantages:

  • Digital quality picture and sound

  • First 3 months free!

  • 50 digital channels plus locals for less than the price of cable

Direct satellite TV is undoubtedly superior to cable television, but we'll let the numbers speak for themselves.  It will be interesting to see how long satellite TV providers can sustain these growth rates.  Will satellite direct TV drive cable providers out of business?  We shall see...
